How do solar panels work?
Inside each panel are many cells made from silicon, a material found in sand. Silicon can absorb light and convert it into electrical energy. When sunlight hits the solar panel, the energy from the light knocks electrons loose from the silicon. These free electrons are then channeled in a specific direction to create a flow of electric current. This process is known as the photovoltaic effect. For more information, see our full fuide on how solar panels work.
Are solar panels worth it?
Solar panels can be a great investment! They can significantly reduce electricity bills over time, and typically pay for themselves in 5-15 years. The initial cost of buying and installing solar panels can be high, but government incentives, tax breaks, and decreasing equipment costs can help offset these expenses. For more information, see our full guide on whether solar panels are worth it.
Do you need planning permission for solar panels in the UK?
Most homes in the UK don’t need planning permission to install solar panels, as they usually fall under permitted development rights. This applies to the majority of residential properties, as long as the panels meet certain size and placement rules. However, there are exceptions. Listed buildings, conservation areas, and some protected locations may require permission before installation. It’s always sensible to check with your local council or planning authority first, especially if your property has any special status or restrictions.
How much do solar panels cost?
The average cost of solar panels is around £7000. The price depends on how many panels you need, the installer you choose, and whether you’re having a battery installed too. For more information, visit our solar panels page.
How many solar panels do I need?
To figure out how many solar panels you need, start by checking how much energy you use each month, which you can find on your electricity bill. Then, think about how sunny it is where you live, because more sun means you’ll need fewer panels. Also, look at the solar panels themselves; some are more efficient and can make more electricity, meaning you might not need as many. For more information, see our full guide on how many solar panels you might need.
Do I need a smart meter to have solar panels?
No, a smart meter isn’t essential for solar panels to work. Your system will generate electricity and power your home regardless of the type of meter you have. However, smart meters can make things simpler, especially if you export electricity to the grid or use flexible energy tariffs. They make it easier to track generation, usage, and export, and they’re often required for certain export payments or smart energy tariffs. So while you don’t need one, having a smart meter can make managing your solar setup more straightforward.
Do I need a battery to have solar panels?
No, you don’t need a battery to have solar panels. Solar panels work perfectly well on their own and have done for years. Without a battery, the electricity you generate is used in your home first, and any surplus is sent back to the grid. A battery simply adds storage, letting you use more of your own energy later in the day instead of exporting it. For many homeowners, panels alone are a good starting point, with batteries added later if energy storage becomes a priority.
What maintenance do solar panels need?
Solar panels are exceptionally low maintenance. Most people find that all they need is occasional cleaning to remove dirt, dust, or debris that could block sunlight. Rain often does a lot of the cleaning naturally, especially on sloped roofs. There are no moving parts, so wear and tear is minimal. An occasional visual check and a professional inspection every few years is usually enough to keep them working properly. For most homeowners, solar panels are very much a “fit and forget” system that just gets on with the job.
How long do solar panels last?
Solar panels last 25 years on average.
