What Was the Feed-In Tariff and Why Was It Scrapped?

The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) was a UK initiative launched in 2010 to encourage renewable energy adoption by paying for electricity generated and exported back to the grid from sources like solar panels.

It was scrapped in 2019 due to achieving its goals of reducing renewable technology costs and increasing renewable energy capacity. The scheme’s end also addressed concerns over its financial sustainability, as it was funded by levies passed onto consumers via energy bills.

The Smart Export Guarantee replaced the FiT, continuing support for renewable energy without imposing additional costs on consumers.
