History

Trina Solar Co., Ltd., commonly known as Trina Solar or Trinasolar, is one of the world’s longest-established and largest solar manufacturers. Founded in 1997 in China by Jifan Gao, the company emerged during the early commercial development of the global photovoltaic industry and has since grown into a major international producer of solar cells, modules, and energy solutions.
From its early years, Trina Solar focused on large-scale manufacturing and international expansion, positioning itself as a volume producer rather than a niche or premium brand. This approach allowed the company to scale rapidly alongside the global growth of solar energy, particularly during the 2000s and 2010s, when demand for photovoltaic modules increased sharply across Europe, North America, and Asia.
Today, Trina Solar operates as a vertically integrated manufacturer, spanning research and development, cell production, module manufacturing, and system-level solutions. Its products are used in residential, commercial, and utility-scale installations worldwide, making it one of the most recognisable names in global solar manufacturing.
Growth into a global manufacturer
Trina Solar’s expansion closely followed the industrialisation of solar power. As manufacturing processes became more standardised and production volumes increased, the company invested heavily in large-scale facilities and supply chains designed to support high output at competitive costs.
Over time, Trina developed a broad product portfolio covering residential rooftop panels through to large-format modules for commercial and utility-scale projects. This manufacturing scale has been one of the defining characteristics of the brand, enabling wide distribution and consistent availability across international markets.
In 2020, Trina Solar listed on the STAR Market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, marking a significant milestone in its corporate development and reflecting its position as one of China’s leading solar technology companies.
Technology development and product strategy
While Trina Solar is often associated with mass production, it has also invested heavily in research and development. The company has consistently worked on improving cell efficiency, module design, and manufacturing processes, contributing to the steady improvements in performance and cost that have characterised the solar industry as a whole.
Product lines such as the Vertex and Vertex S series reflect this strategy, combining high-wattage outputs with formats suitable for both residential and large-scale installations. Trina’s approach has typically focused on incremental technological improvement combined with manufacturing scale, rather than radical design shifts or niche specialisation.
This balance has allowed Trina Solar to remain competitive across different market segments, from domestic rooftop systems to large commercial and utility projects.
International expansion and regulatory challenges
As Trina Solar expanded globally, it became increasingly exposed to geopolitical, regulatory, and trade pressures. Like many large Chinese manufacturers, the company has faced scrutiny over supply chains, manufacturing locations, and trade practices.
In 2023, academic research raised concerns about Trina Solar’s exposure to production in Xinjiang and the associated risks of forced labour within supply chains. The same year, the United States Department of Commerce ruled that Trina Solar had circumvented tariffs on Chinese-made goods, intensifying regulatory pressure on its operations in the US market.
In 2024, Trina Solar sold its newly opened manufacturing plant in Texas shortly after it began operations, following increased government scrutiny of Chinese companies benefiting from US clean energy incentives. This move highlighted the growing complexity of operating across international markets shaped by shifting trade policies and political considerations.
Trina Solar today
Today, Trina Solar stands as one of the most significant industrial players in global solar manufacturing. It represents the large-scale, high-volume model of photovoltaic production that has driven down the cost of solar power worldwide and enabled mass adoption across residential and commercial markets.
